Summary: There was a reason why Reborn got Haru involved with the Mafia. Even if she was useless to them in fights and even if she couldn't provide as much emotional strength as Kyoko, she was vital and without her, there would just be no Vongola. G86/GiottoHaru

Genesis: Chapter 13
HappyFace1886
Attilio narrowed his eyes as he sat before the simple wooden table of the cottage he was in. The presence of all those within the room weighed heavily on his shoulders, their eyes staring at him with respect and demand.
“Please, revered father,” an
elderly voice spoke from across the table. It was clear that he was the eldest
and considered the leader of the group. “You
know what must be done.”
“The girl is innocent.” Attilio
replied smoothly.
“Indeed she is,” the
old man agreed. “All the more reason why
we must do this.”
“The boy won’t let her go.”
From the
other side of the room, another man, a much younger one, replied angrily. “That is for us to decide.”
Attilio
hid his scowl well, the only thing belying his displeasure being the flash of
his emerald eyes. To contain his emotions, he drained the cup of water that had
been offered to him. All around, there was a murmur of assent that went in
accord with the younger man.
“Revered father,” the
elderly man spoke quietly and Attilio placed the cup onto the table, lowering
his eyes.
“It shall be done.”
“Haru,” Giotto’s
voice quietly filtered into her mind and she looked up at him curiously. Since
she wasn’t as good of a climber as he, Haru had settled on sitting on the base
of the tree while Giotto remained high up on a tree branch. “Do you... Do you
miss Japan?”
“Hahi?” The
question surprised her, but she answered honestly, the tone of her voice
bittersweet as memories welled up in her mind. “Of course I do. Japan is my
home and there are a lot of people I would like to see again.”
Haru
trusted Reborn-chan and if he sent her back in time for a reason, then that
must mean there’s something she must accomplish. So, once she finished her job,
she should be able to go home. At least, that’s what she believed. Perhaps it’s
to change Giotto-sama so that he would stop being so cynical about the world?
He couldn’t become the man who created the Vongola as a vigilante group if he
hated people, after all.
She
leaned against the trunk and sighed, only to squeak when there was a rush of
air and a soft thump as Giotto landed in front of her. Startled, she placed a
hand over her beating heart and looked at him. There was a frown on his face as
he remained crouched in front of her.
“What
sort of people?” he inquired.
“Lots of
people,” she said thoughtfully, placing a finger on a chin as she looked upward
contemplatively. “There are my parents, for one. They must be worried sick
about how I’ve disappeared. Then there are my friends.”
“Friends?”
he echoed before pressing forward. “What kind of friends?”
“All
kinds of friends,” she said with a solemn grin. How funny was it that the ones
she missed the most were her friends, not her family. They were her support,
after all, through all the dangers. It’s actually no wonder that she depended
on them the most. “There’s Bianchi-san. She’s one of the smartest people I
know! Very wise in life and love. Kyoko-chan is my best friend! She’s the one I
talk to about everything! I-pin-chan and Lambo-chan are these two little kids and
they’re very sweet! I often played with them.”
“I see,”
he leaned back on the balls of his feet.
“Aren’t
there people you would miss as well, Giotto-sama?” she asked. “If Giotto-sama
was suddenly away from here, wouldn’t you miss people as well? And people miss
you?”
He shook
his head. “There’s no one.”
“Not
even Attilio-san?” Haru asked gently, remembering a similar conversation
between them from before. And like before, the same sad smile appeared as he
shook his head. “Even if he’s a priest, aren’t you two close?”
“No,”
Giotto looked away. “Attilio is following his duty.”
She
wanted to ask him more since Giotto rarely talked about himself, but the way
they were positioned was discomforting. Even though Giotto was just a foot away
from her, his shoulders looked so heavy, his eyes so distant, and the frown on
his face permanent. Haru reached out and brushed the tip of her fingers against
his face.
Funny
how a few weeks ago she would have been mortified by such caresses, but now
things were different. She had a goal and that was to help Giotto-sama... and
even doing something like this was embarrassing, she would for his sake! That
didn’t stop her heart from thumping like crazy though.
When she
had his attention, she beckoned him closer and he did so without a word,
shuffling close until he was sitting right beside her before the tree. He was
slumped lower against the trunk, his head resting on her shoulder. “What do you
mean by duty?”
“He is a
priest.” Giotto replied simply, getting comfortable. There was a note of
finality in his words that made her bite her lip. Okay, so he didn’t want to
talk. That didn’t mean she was going to end this all on a sour note!
“Hey
Giotto-sama, let’s play a game.” She said determinedly.
“Hide
and seek?” he asked sleepily and Haru giggled.
“I don’t
think you’re in the condition to play that game.” She said and he shook his
head on her shoulder, his arms reaching to hug her.
“If Haru
wants to, I will play.”
In a
normal situation, this would have made her twitter and blush, but it made her
frown instead. What did he mean by that? Why was he so desperate to indulge her
needs all the time? “It’s okay. This game is very simple and fun. It’s a
guessing game where one tries to figure out what the other person is thinking,
whether it’s an animal or a plant. The person doing the guessing can ask
questions to get clues. For example, you can ask if what I’m thinking of is
alive or if it’s a specific color, anything to deduce what I’m thinking.”
“When
does the game end?” Giotto asked.
“When
the answer is found or if the person gives up. The winner will gain one favor
from the loser.” She said with a bit of a challenge in her voice, knowing he
would react favorably to that. And as she predicted, she could practically feel
the smile in his words.
“Haru
will think of something?”
“I
already have one,” she chirped, throwing a haughty look even though he couldn’t
see since he was insistent on leaning against her still.
There
was a light chuckle from him. “Is it an animal?”
“Nope.”
“Plant?”
he asked, knowing how much Haru enjoyed playing with the wildflowers in some of
the clearings.
“No.”
“Person?”
“Yes!”
the way she replied so excitedly made him smile, but then the smile turned
pensive. Between the two of them, they didn’t know much people. Giotto didn’t
know much of anyone in Haru’s life, especially those in Japan.
He
didn’t think he could bear hearing much about those missed by Haru, of how much
she wanted to leave him and return to her own people. It was hard enough
hearing about the few Haru had shared with him, of the people Haru would leave
him for.
“Does
this person have green eyes?” he asked quietly and he felt her shift a little
as she shook her head.
“No.”
“...blue?”
“Sometimes.”
“Sometimes?”
he asked, confused.
“My
person’s eyes are blue, though I’ve never seen them myself.” She said a little
shyly. “But the person told me that their eyes are normally blue so yes,
sometimes they’re blue. And I bet the eyes appear very kind and warm even in
that color.”
Giotto’s
heart sped up a bit, but he didn’t dare raise his head from Haru’s shoulder.
“Does he... have yellow hair?”
“Yellow?”
Haru tilted her head, incidentally pressing her cheek briefly on Giotto’s head.
“I think they’re more gold than yellow.”
Gold?
Did Haru... Did Haru mean that as a good thing?
“Is it
someone Haru will miss if she... if she ever went away?” he asked hopefully and
the vulnerability in his voice made her heart clench.
“No, I
will not miss him.” He stiffened. “Because he’s someone I will never willingly leave on my own.”
Giotto
remained frozen for a bit before he slowly began to relax. Haru couldn’t see
the expression on his face, but judging by how hard he was clinging to her, it
must be something endearing.
A part
of her wanted to smack herself on the head. Even if it was indirect, how could
she make such promises like that? It was so reckless and so-so-so stupid! She
didn’t belong in this timeline! She had her own life to return to, to be
reunited with her friends and family.
But, a
faint voice cried feebly from the recess of her mind, she couldn’t just abandon
him.
When
Giotto’s breathing deepened and the weight of his head seemed to grow heavier,
Haru couldn’t help but crack a smile at how he’d fallen asleep.
...oh
well... she would think about that later.
And then
she almost laughed, a mischievous glint growing in her eyes.
Giotto
never guessed who she was thinking about.
